The only thing I use on my body these days is oil. Plain kitchen oil preferably organic usually avocado, olive or sesame. If we've learned anything from HRT it's that our skin absorbs things so I try to limit what I put on my body now. I need to get into a better habit of putting the oil on before my shower instead of after. I know how important it is but I've never been very good at it. You've inspired me to give it another try. I've been super dry lately and I'm usually like this until about March. Vata in Vata season in Vata life phase. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I enjoyed this writing very much. Thank you for the reminder to nourish ourselves with oil and allow it to soak first while stretching, then shower. I always do it backwards!
I havent tried sesame oil.
And now I'm curious to know... How is sesame a superior skin oil choice?
Thanks for asking. As with all things Ayurveda my answer is it depends. And this time I also have to ask the question or rather answer your question with for whom is sesame oil a superior choice.
Sesame oil has certain qualities which makes it superior for vāta dominant people, environments and seasons. Sesame oil is deeply penetrating, warming and is one of the highest form of easily 'digestible' calcium. This means that if a person lives in a cold or dry environment or its winter sesame will help maintain body temperature. If the person is extremely dry, sesame oil can easily penetrate the 3 layers moving into other tissue like fascia and muscle.
Coconut oil for example may be a better choice if the person is pitta dominant, living in hot environment or summer. Coconut oil is cooling and does not penetrate deeply.
I have been seed cycling with my perimenopause cycle and I love it. In the 1st half I have pepitas/pumpkin seeds and flax seed. In the 2nd half- sunflower and sesame seeds.
So I found it interesting that sesame oil is the oil of choice for the fall winter seasons and phase of life when it also lines up with the concept of seed cycling in the menstrual cycle. Sesame supports estrogen as a lignan phytoestrogen.
Thank you for this! Shuffling off to buy some sesame oil promptly!

Hi Jess! I've just recently heard about seed cycling, but don't know much about it. Would love to learn more.
